I don't live on the Island, I live in Horton (7 miles west of Roscoe). I ride snowmobiles out to the Schoolhouse and to the Rainbow Lodge all the time. I don't ride my quad out to Walton as I don't know a way to get from Shinhopple/Corbit to Walton without going through the state park.

I think it was the absolute best trail rex yet. I think for the future we need to have a ton of signage and also more club involvement. Non of the jeep clubs or other clubs that were interested actually showed. As far as events and things to do at Trail Rex I cant see it being anything other then a great success in organizing riders and Jeepers etc.

I have never stayed at the Beaver Creek Lodge but I have been inside and you picked a great place to stay. The ATV trails run behind the Inn. One good thing about riding the Hill their are plenty of places to eat and to purchase fuel. One of the things that you should consider purchasing is a Trail permit to ride the reforestation trails www.tughilladirondacksatv.com and at the top of the site click on Trail Permits you can also wait and purchase the permits when you get to the hill. Send me a email and I will be more than happy answer any of your questions region6a@nysorva.org

Annual Tug Hill 500 for ATV riders set Aug. 28
COPENHAGEN — All-terrain-vehicle riders will have another chance this summer to get dirty in an organized fashion.
Tuggers Campgrounds, 544 Route 177, is sponsoring the fourth annual Tug Hill 500 poker ride Aug. 28. The event is a fundraiser for the Tug Hill Wheelers ATV Club in Barnes Corners. Club members take on the responsibility of maintaining ATV trails throughout the Tug Hill region.
"This isn't the biggest event on the hill, but we are chartering close to 400 or 500 riders," said Gerald D. Garvin, owner of Tuggers. "It's a pretty fun ride, though. We're getting toward the end of the summer, so it's one last organized ride for families before school starts."
John G. McGraw, Tug Hill Wheelers president, said the group appreciates Tuggers hosting the event.
"Maintaining the trails is a joint effort between our club and other ATV clubs in the county," he said. "We purchase a lot of stone and lumber to build bridges and put on the soft spots along the trails. If you don't maintain the trails, then you will just erode the ground and cause damage."
Participants can sign up from 6 to 9 p.m. Aug. 27 or from 9 a.m. to noon Aug. 28 at Tuggers. The cost for each rider is $10. The ride starts at noon Aug. 28, and participants stop at each of the six stops along the way in search of the best poker hand. Riders must be back at Tuggers by 6 p.m.
Maps of the ride route will be available at the poker run locations: Tuggers; Montague Inn; Flat Rock Inn, Martinsburg; Timberview Lodge, Houseville; Louie's, Barnes Corners, and Tug Hill Hook & Ladder, Lowville.
"Round trip to all the places and back again would be about 85 to 100 miles," Mr. Garvin said. "If anyone wants an expanded route, maps will be on sale at every vendor. The trails are open and there are a lot of places to ride."
Mr. Garvin said that each year, the event grows with more riders, many from throughout the Northeast.
"We get people from New Jersey, Pennsylvania — a lot of people that haven't experienced the area yet," he said. "They'll come here and they find out what a jewel this place is all about."

Deaths of teens, man stress importance of helmet safety
By Colin DeVries
Hudson-Catskill Newspapers
Published: Wednesday, August 18, 2010 2:15 AM EDT

CATSKILL — With the death of a 37-year-old Cairo man Sunday, the total of Greene County all-terrain vehicle deaths has been raised to three within only four weeks.

An autopsy found that Christopher G. Barcey died of a skull fracture and torn aorta, according to the Greene County Sheriff’s Office, after being knocked from an ATV Sunday evening.

A factor to Barcey’s death, according to authorities, was the use of an improper helmet.

According to Sheriff’s Investigator Adam Brainard, Barcey used a full-faced BMX bicycle helmet instead of a helmet appropriate for ATV use.

Last month, two teens died from head injuries after striking a tree while riding on an ATV together in Palenville.

Seventeen-year-old Jennifer O’Brien and 15-year-old Michael White were driving without headlights along Pennsylvania Avenue when they veered off the road and struck the tree after midnight on July 27.

Dr. Jeffrey Hubbard, a pathologist who examined the teens, determined both O’Brien and White suffered closed head injuries resulting in their deaths. White additionally suffered a fractured skull with brain damage.

Though White was wearing a helmet, police reported it was not properly fastened. O’Brien was not wearing a helmet.

In Barcey’s case, alcohol and drugs were involved, according to sheriff’s investigators, though toxicology results have not yet been released.

According to the sheriff’s office, Barcey was inexperienced at operating an ATV and was riding a 2004 Kawasaki 700, a powerful and fast machine, at a high rate of speed.

The common factor in all the incidents, was either the lack of, or improper helmet use, stressing the importance of helmet safety.

According to the ATV Safety Institute, it is recommended that ATV operators take a training and safety course prior to riding.

The proper use of protective gear, including helmets and chest protectors, is critical to safe riding.

Training and safety information can be found at www.nyatvsafety.net.
